Storyboard (shot by shot) by Harley Golder:

By completing this it has enabled me to become closer to filming and its giving me more of a feel for what will happen in the trailer! I made the storyboard on sticky notes which i then took photos of individually and cropped and then put into pages, to then upload onto slideshare.

Time Management Week 5 (08/12/15):

This week i have been spending the majority of my time constructing/creating a storyboard with shot by shot in order to help with the order of filming i plan to finish both of the tasks highlighted in orange below perhaps even do some filming or even take the photo for my magazine front cover image. If the tasks i mentioned above are completed it will allow me to progress rapidly which i am keen to do. I plan to have my story board uploaded by the end of the week, and the tasks that are mentioned above. There will be an update on my progress on my Time Management Week 6 (15/12/15) post.

Time Management 4 (01/12/15):

Due to having such a set back the last week, it has caused some of the below date targets not to be met as of the events however im trying my hardest to catch up, but this week has been a tough week to organise everything and try to catch up on the recent events however i now feel confident again as i've discussed with my teachers the issues and they've been very helpful!

Exploring Narrative Theories:

Original narrative outline:
Dad has just been released from prison after several years inside, all because of football related violence he hasn't been able to see his son for a long period of time. He is finally released however little did he know that his son is following in his footsteps of becoming a football hooligan. The father wants his son to stop(he then has a flashback to when he was apart of the firm), as he knows the trouble and violence that is involved in the modern game. The father makes him promise to never get involved with the 'wolf pack' (a violent group of hooligans) again. He promises his dad. But when its match day its a different story! The son creeps out and visits his so called 'family' the wolf pack, the same group as what his father used to be 'top boy' at. Particular members of the group never used to like the fathers as he was in charge of everything, so they seek revenge on him and know that the only way to achieve this is to get at his young son. The trailer will end when the young boy is chased into an area where there is no exit. It will then jump to the credits and the film name.

Re-write using narrative theories:
In order to relate with Cameron's episodic or dual narrative i would need to focus on the dad and/or son's viewpoint this will make my audience see the connection between them.
I would like to perhaps include Propp's 7 characters, theoretically i would need 7 actors, however i would plan to use objects rather than actors for some roles. For example:
  1. The Hero: The dad would be the hero due to him trying his hardest to get his son on the right track.
  2. The Villain: The dad could be this due to the fact that he is trying to prevent his son from being an active member in the firm, although he may be doing the right thing.
  3. The Doner: A photo album could do this as it will bring back memories to the father about how his son has changed and how he has been a bad role model.
  4. The Helper: This could be someone who the father is text messaging asking for advice etc.
  5. The Princess: This could also be a male character, i think it would be the son. As he feels most threatened by his father due to him wanting to stop being a partaker in football violence.
  6. The Dispatcher: Could almost be the flash backs that the father will be having about what he used to do when he was his sons age.
  7. The False Hero: I feel would not fit in trailer at this stage
Todorov:
Todorov's theory is that there is a template followed by all films etc. This is what he feels is included in each film:

  1. The narrative starts in a state of equilibrium: stable, balanced unchanging system, this applies to my trailer due to the fact that I plan to have my two characters apart at the beginning, due to the father coming out of prison and the son leaving the house for football.
  2. An action or character disrupts the equilibrium, for instance as the father has just come out of prison, he will now find out that his son is following in his footsteps, resulting in the father wanting to change his sons routine.
  3. Following recognition of the disruption, a quest is set in order to restore equilibrium. This is much the case in my trailer, as the father will receive a text message or will be notified that his son, is following in his shoes.
  4. The narrative moves to confrontation/climax: there is an attempt to repair the disruption, likewise in my trailer whereby the father makes his son promise he will stop going to cause trouble at football.
  5. Resolution/equilibrium is restored and reinstated. This mildly applies to my trailer however the resolution will be the son being chased by members of the firm however the ending is not revealed meaning it will end of a cliffhanger.

Possible Locations:

Here are some possible location ideas that i will or i am debating as to whether i will use the shots or not. However there will be more locations but i have not decided as to where at this point in time!

HMP Norwich:
I feel this would be a good area to film the father leaving the prison... this picture below may be an ideal area to record from, as it will show the tall walls and maybe even the barbed wire on the walls. This location will make the shot feel more realistic and extreme.

Carrow Road:
Due to being a Norwich City Football Club season ticket holder, i go to every home match played at the stadium. As I'm doing a crime drama football trailer i feel to have some recording from inside the ground on a match day would be very valuable and effective.

Public House (Pub) in Norwich:
Most if not all crime drama football trailers have a scene at the pub, this can be seen as a place where firms hang out before the match... also its a very hostile environment for different types of people. Its definitely a place to avoid before the match! although it may be hard to record in a pub discreetly, i am willing to try though. As i feel it'll give good effect to the trailer!

Analysing Characters (Father): (UNFINISHED)

Time Management Week 3 (24/11/15):

As explained in my recent events post, i have had a change of plan. Here is my week 3 time management chart:
Due to the recent events it has caused me to basically start all over again as everything is now invalid and not appropriate, however i am not going to let this get in the way of my goal/ambition of being successful this year, but this is definitely a set back! On the other hand it has taught me to choose a more reliable cast which i am now looking for/thinking of.

Recent Events:

Recently, I have been let down by my actors, leading to change in storyline and potential actors. However I do not feel this will effect me, due to mentally I will work harder in order to achieve the grades I want!

Time Management Week 2 (17/11/15):

This week has been successful I feel due to the fact that I've got two rough ideas for my a plot/story line which took me a lot of time to think of. Another reason is that i am starting tasks earlier than i planned which is good as that means that i am not falling behind other members in my class. The reason that 05/12/15 is in progress is that i'm trying to give my actors as much notice as possible in order to be available for me to film. By next week i plan to have everything up to the 24/11/15 highlighted green in order for it to be a successful week! I will be making one of these 'Time Management' posts every Tuesday with the next one being on the 24/11/15.

Date                      Task
11/11/15: Complete generation of ideas
17/11/15: Analyse pictures of characters

Storyline ideas:

My ideas consist of the following:
Trailer plot:
  • Dad leaving the prison after several years inside, indicate with titles
  • also show the son leaving the house for football, to show the audience the connection.
  • series of flashback timeline shots dad and son .... ? flicking through photo album
  • cut with symbolic aggression shots
  1.

  • use GoPro for chase scene

Availability Form For My Actors:

I'm thinking of handing these out to my actors when I next see them all on the 29/11/15, this will allow me to work out times whereby most if not all actors are available to film.

Wednesday 11 November 2015

Generation Of Ideas:

Rough ideas for my Crime Drama Football Trailer:
I would like to record a group of young adults who go to football, which will be portrayed as football hooligans. These people will all be wearing iconic and recognisable football terrace wear, such as; Stone Island, CP Company, Adidas Trainers etc... All of which are not cheap so it would be hard to get actors without these brands, however I'am lucky enough to have friends with this sort of clothing who would be willing to be in my teaser trailer. At this point in time I'm unsure of the film name however I have rough ideas such as 'Green 'N' Yellow Street' to give the audience the link between 'Green Street' and the genres. Also these colours in football are very well known to Norwich City Football Club. I plan to film in the city, this will take place either on match days or non match days, most likely a mixture of both to give a good effect with crowd. The shots that I would like to take could include some of the following initial ideas; a low angle shot of the 'hooligans' walking past the camera to show the classic Adidas 'trotters' (shoes), plus it will show the sheer numbers in the firm. Another shot that I would like, would be a camera in the local pub on match day, I would need to ensure that the filming of these characters is very discreet and barely noticeable due to other peoples reactions being different if someone is recording... The main reason for this shot is to record the firms entrance into the pub.

For my ancillary product (magazine front cover picture) I would like to get all of the people in the firm to have a group picture, however I do not want to expose peoples faces the effect which I would like to create is shown below:

I believe the blurring of faces would create a sense of mystery and add an element of danger as they don't want other firms to know who they are. However on the other hand I would also like to trial the idea below:

Whereby everyone's face is either blurred or covered and the 'Top Boy(s)' face is clearly shown to indicate he is the main character. I do not plan to have any females in the group due to firms being very male dominated.

Time Management Week 1 (10/11/15):

Here is a table that will help me organise my time on my 3 products for this year. The tasks highlighted green, indicate that they are complete, amber means that that is my next task to complete/in progress and red means that I'm not at that task yet. This will make it easier to plan and prepare for me and my actors...

Production Plan:

What do I need to do to make my 3 products happen?
  • Organise and arrange for actors
  • create storyboards
  • know the main storyline and plot
  • software being used
  • research clothing that potential actors have
  • research into music
  • locations
  • mise en scene
  • sound
  • film name
  • titles
  • character names
  • script
  • costume
  • job allocation
  • editing
  • lighting
  • budget
All of the above is needed in order to create a successful year of productions, as I am aiming for all my pieces of media to follow suit from last years OTS (Opening Title Sequence) final quality. As if this years productions lack on quality it won't look as good and will probably cost me marks... Also I plan to perform my music on the trumpet I have at home and the drum I have aswell, this will boost my mark and perhaps add a better effect to the production.

Survey Results (Click Images To Enlarge):

Survey Results from 20 people:

This question was useful due to the fact that it allowed me to see what the audience expects from crime drama football trailer. From question one it is clear that after looking at the percentages on ranking at the bottom of the screenshot, the most favoured order is: Tension/conflict (1), Violence/fighting (2), Football chanting (3). This will allow me to base my production around the results gained from my potential target audience, in order to keep them interested.

This was useful because it indicated the iconic types and brands of clothing associated with football hooliganism. My results showed that some clothing brands were more popular than others, for instance the two clear favourites were 'Adidas Gazelle's' (40%) and 'Stone Island' (30%). By knowing this it will allow me as the producer to try and focus the costumes/clothing on those particular brands, in order to meet the audiences demands.

This question caused much controversy and a divide in opinion from my survey participants. Some views that were negative included; There is a representation of football fans as hooligans...violent and aggressive. Behaving like pack animals. They are working class. ..white and loud. Something i would avoid", "People to avoid". However positive comments included; "It's all about comradery, if you haven't experienced it then it's hard to understand. From the outside they can seem very threatening. I would associate casual clothing, drinking culture and the working class", "Football hooligans are not bad people. Just your average lads who enjoy a bit of a thrill at the weekend". This will allow me to identify how others see football hooligans,                                                                               and base my group of actors off of these opinions!

The question I wrote was helpful to find out what others felt the age of a modern football hooligan was, it was clear that the most common age was 16-20 (52.3%) closely followed by 21-30 (36.8%). This personally i good for me due to my age being 17 and most of my potential actors being around the same age! This is allow me to base my actors around the most common age group according to my results, leading to meeting my potential target audiences demands.

Task 7:Researching form, structure, deconstructing codes and using film language:

Completed just need to add pictures of notes!
I reviewed and analysed Awaydays 2009 trailer:

AWAYDAYS UK trailer 2009 from Red Union Films on Vimeo.

Here are my Task 7 notes, with a analysis of the above trailer and a timeline of each part!

Friday 16 October 2015

How will semiotics improve my idea?:

Semiotics is is the study of meaning-making, the study of sign processes and meaningful communication. For instance a red light can be seen as stop, danger, red light district, warning, on, emergency etc... all of which can be something you associate with a word or meaning.

In my production I would be keen to use semiotics however this may be a challenge due to the fact that I doubt there will be a red light or similar in my trailer! But by using actors it will allow me to see how a group of young hooligans would be seen in the public eye. For example a group of people not wearing iconic clothing associated with football hooliganism would just be seen as normal and approachable, whereas a group wearing brands such as;Weekend Offender, Lacoste, Adidas, Stone Island, CP Company etc, could be seen as a potential threat to bystanders as these are clothing brands often associated with hooligans. But to really make a group people looking like hooligans to be seen as dangerous and intimidating, blood could be added to make it seem as if they are going/returning from battle with rival firms (groups of hooligans)!

Going back to the point regarding dress code for a football hooligan, below is a picture that I felt represented the look of a 'footy lad' very well due to popular brands such as; Ellesse and Fila which are known to be worn by such hooligans. However lately there has been a rise in different ethnicity's that are becoming part of a culture. Also age is very key as you don't see many old hooligans due to the fact that most have families and stuff limiting the part they have to play in a firm, and they may have lost the enjoyment of it unlike the younger groups of hooligans.

Football Hooligans Today vs Hooligans 20 Years Ago

Football hooligans today!

Football hooligans 20 years ago:

20 years ago football hooligans were much older than they are now! due to the reasons mentioned earlier!

Initial Production Ideas/Research:Survey

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VPC6TCW Please complete this on behalf of my research for my trailer!
How did I share this survey to get responses from others?
Originally I just posted the above link to this blog, which would have got me a maximum of 5 responses which is my eyes was not sufficient due to wanting a wide variety of answers from different age groups etc, this means that I need to think of ideas on how to share this in order to get appropriate feedback which will then help me create my trailer in the future!

However after thinking about how to share this further, I began to think how popular mobile phones are nowadays leading to me sending several text messages out to be people with the link of the survey and asking them to contact me once they had completed it 3 people done this meaning that at this point I had around 6-8 responses. But after asking my fellow classmates it was clear that more responses were needed. One night I was checking my social media accounts and stumbled across a post about modern football hooliganism, after reading some of the comments regarding the post, I felt it was appropriate to put the link in a comments for in the hope that someone would spare 2 minutes and complete my survey. Also due to the type of people the post was aimed at, I felt that I'd get a more accurate type of response due to the people commenting expressing an opinion (negative and positive) views upon the issue. A few hours later the response rate increased dramatically from 6-8 to 18 which will now give me a broader type of answers to analyse! Overall this is a great success as it will help me see how others see football hooligans and the culture!

Initial Production Ideas/Research:

I constructed some research into Crime Drama Football Trailers in order to gather ideas for what I want to include in my production:
AwayDays 2009 trailer:
Heartbeat
Slow motion
Different characters opinions as to what they think of hooliganism
"One last away day then we're done!"

Rise Of The Footsoldier:
Someone talking over a shot, it helps to explain whats happening in the film and creates a good effect as if the 4th wall is being broken, i.e. "it was a rotten era" and "we were just lookin' for a tear up"

Green Street Hooligans:
Follows one character and how he got to be a football hooligan!
"its football day" as a group they are known as "family" and they always refer to "stand your ground"
I liked the effect of running down train station like steps with cuts and wounds as if they have returned from battle and importantly wearing iconic football clothing!
Footwear Shots
Green Street (masthead) is at the end which keeps the viewer watching

The Firm:
Tension throughout
Referred to as "The Casuals"
Tradition and a way of life
Lots of iconic clothing brands for football hooliganism

This will help me in the future in order to put together ideas that I can use/replicate in my production!

Job Roles:

This post contains comparison of roles in the professional industry and roles in my production...

Camera Operator: Me,  films each shot and scene. In the film industry, they have access to high quality equipment which allows the overall production to be of a high standard of quality. However due to having a low budget it means that I may have to use affordable cameras and equipment, meaning that the production compared to the a companies film may not look as good quality wise.

Actors: Others, Interpreting others' words in order to bring a script to life, and to put flesh and blood on characters, however film companies normally use actors that meet the criteria they are looking for. Whereas in my production I will be using close friends in order to complete this task, at first I thought i would have trouble assigning actors, but this has not been the case thankfully.

Lighting Technicians: Decides the amount of light to be used in each shot, professionally, spotlights and other fine equipment is used, however it's likely I will be relying on natural light and maybe adjustable lights in my house etc.

Choreographer: Trains actors to perform a routine, usually this job requires someone with a certain expertise in something which can then be taught to others. In my case I'm untrained in this category meaning that I shall be improvising in order to organise the actions of my actors.

Editor: Me, Uses software to collaborates with the sound department and the actors in order to put together a number of clips into a final piece. I feel as if I could get good results from the editing side due to becoming familiar with final cut pro in the past. I'm aiming to make the final production to look quality on the editing side!

Director: Me, This job entails organising people on a set and also organising props, actors etc. I plan to be very professional when it comes to filming. In order to ensure that the actors and others know what is expected from them. This will also help to make my production better quality rather than unorganised and 'tacky'.

Costume Designer: Me, due to the fact that I will need to ensure that my actors are wearing clothing that is clearly linked with football hooliganism

Music Creator: I would like to take the task of creating music in order for it to fit with my trailer.

Location Manager: I will have most of the say for this, due to the fact that its my trailer! I will need to ensure that the locations fit with the style of my trailer.

Producer: Would be ideal however due to the fact that this is only a low budget trailer its highly unlikely there will be one, however the job entails- http://creativeskillset.org/job_roles_and_stories/job_roles/757_producer Producers have overall control on every aspect of a film's production. They bring together and approve the whole production team. Their key responsibility is to create an environment where the talents of the cast and crew can flourish. Producers are accountable for the success of the finished film. They steer the film from beginning to completion and beyond.
